I think Halloween is secretly every seamstress' favorite holiday, with so much freedom and imagination. This year Scarlett was Tinkerbell. I would rather her have been something more unique but she's stubborn and was not wavering so made her a Tinker.

The skirt originally had many more bells but came off too easily so I finally left it alone.

I'm tempted to make her Scarlett O 'Hara next year if she'll agree....

Emerald Wool + Sparkle

As soon as I saw this emerald wool suiting, I knew it was destined for my little blue-eyed redhead.

I just love this dress. It's made from wool suiting and I used real glass beads that I purchased in the fabric district in NYC for $1 a piece. They contain tiny little holes on each side of beads that you can loop thread through.

For the pattern, I altered the perfect dress to make it more fitted throughout the torso and flare at the knee. My only regret is that the lining puckered slightly during final alternations. Other than that, I love it!

Bustle Bum Skirt Tutorial

This is a fun and easy skirt that can be made for about any season. Find a lightweight/thin material. Anything thick would not bustle well and cause the back to sag considerably.

First, let’s cut the fabric. I have the formula below and also put an example in red to see what I used on my skinny three year-old daughter.

To get width, take the waist measurement and multiply it by 1.8

Example. Scarlett’s waist is 20 inches. 20 X 1.8 = 36 inches

For length, measure from the waist to whatever length you desire and then add about three inches for seams and waistband.

We now need to get measurements A and B below.

To get A, take the waist measurements and subtract three inches. (20 -3 =17 inches).

To get measurement B, take the length and subtract A and then divide in half.

Example:

36 (Length) – 17 (Waist minus three inches)= 19 inches

19 inches / 2 = 9.5 inches

At this point, just simply make small marks on the top of the rectangular to record where the division between A and B are. We will be coming back to that shortly.

Ok, how fold the fabric in half, with right sides together, like shown.

Sew the non-folded side closed.

This will create a tube. Now, take the upper edge (where the waistband will be) and fold the fabric down approximately ¼”. Press that down and then fold it about a inch down. This is the waistband and casing where the elastic will be inserted so just make it slightly wider than the elastic you are using (I recommend ¾” – 1” elastic). Pin the waistband down every few inches.

Once pinned, take the pin and have the center seam facing you (skirt should still be inside out). This is where you refer to where sections B start. Like the diagram below, sew the waistband down from B to B (it will take you across the seam).

Next, take the elastic, guided with a closed safety pin, and feed it through the part of the waistband you just stitched.

Secure it on the other side with the safety pin and pull to make it bustle. Pull it until there are about three inches of bustle at top. Secure the other side with a safety pin. This is a great time to have the child try it on to see if you would like the elastic tightened or loosened. Once you find the ideal size, sew a line through the elastic, vertically, at each end, to secure it. That was a mouthful.

See the photos for clarification. Hopefully this makes sense!

Now, sew the rest of the waistband closed (the rest will all be section A). And then chose the length desired for the skirt and create a hem by folding and sewing.

Turn right side out. It is starting to resemble a skirt! Hopefully my directions don’t have you flustered at this point.

For the bow, sew a rectangle and wrap fabric around the middle. Tack to skirt.

And you’re done!

The Chevron Dress

I love this material! I bought it off etsy a few months ago and have been wondering what to do with it ever since. Two nights ago, it hit me that it would make a beautiful full dress and I whipped it up that night. I love spontaneous sewing projects.

I used this same dress pattern (New Look 6879), but made the sleeveless version and added more volume to the skirt.

Scarlett put it on and promptly informed me that she did not like this dress. What a little stinker. Toddlers sure know how to show gratitude, right?

Inspiration

Inspiration for sewing comes from all over. I love to browse online sites, such as crewcuts and Janie and Jack. However, you may be surprised to know that one of my best sources for ideas comes from our children's illustrations.

My favorite illustrator is Gyo Fujikawa, who wrote and illustrated many books through out the 60's and 70's. Babies is her most famous work.

The dresses she draws on her little characters are just precious!!! I continually glean ideas from her illustrations to incorporate into my sewing.

1. I love the white peter pan collar with the simple dress (you could use 'The Perfect Dress' to create this).

2. The three-quarter length sleeves are perfect with the stark black and white pattern. I could use this pattern again and just lengthen the sleeves. A black peter pan collar would be cute with it as well. And maybe a sash.

3. This is just fun. The collar is too much but I still love it.

4. Gingham anything steals my heart. I love this!!! I am currently on creating this right now.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

Sequins

I've had sequin trims for years and never used them since I was not sure how to. Well, I finally decided to just wing and and found that they are really easy to work with.

The strands of sequins have a definite front and back.

Place the sequins down on the skirt and make sure that they are lapped going away from the presser foot, so the presser foot does not catch them while sewing. Sew, as normal, in the very middle of the trim and you are done. Easy!

Make-Your-Own-Patterns

The more I sew, the more I enjoy creating patterns from favorite clothes we already own.

Take this little dress...

Scarlett wore this all winter long, with leggings. I loved how comfortable it was and decided to create spring dresses for her, based on this pattern.

I took the dress and created a paper pattern. From there I altered the pattern to make it short-sleeved and added a flouncy ruffle. This was what the new pattern became:

A simple happy summer dress.

The fabric I scored for only $3 a yard in the clearance bin and it is Juicy Couture. It is a lightweight, loose, and super-soft knit.

Tips for Making your own Patterns from Clothes:

1. You can create patterns by measuring and guestimating without cutting up the old item. However, being able to cut out clear pieces make pattern-copying much easier. This is where thrift stores became a gold-mine. Pay $1 or so for something that you don't mine destroying so you can use it to create a pattern.

2. Use pattern paper. Please, please, please don't go cheap and try to use anything else. It is on a grid and will make your life much easier.

3. Most pieces are symmetrical. Therefore, you only need to draw half of the pattern on the paper. Then place it on a fold and cut it out to ensure both sides are exact.

4. Make sure you add seem allowances! So important.

5. Be flexible. Improvise if things are turning out perfect. See the ruffle on her skirt above? That was a last minute add-on when I realized I made it too short.

6. Have fun! Make the pattern your own. Add your own details and don't try to make an exact replica.

Easter Dresses

For the first time ever, I actually finished the Easter dresses before Easter. Whoohoooo!

I went pretty traditional, using Shirley Temple as my inspiration. I loved her high-waisted full dresses.

For the fabric, I chose a lightweight Swiss Dot for a nostalgic feel. I instantly go weak whenever I come across Swiss Dot and it instantly is added to the fabric stash.

For the pattern, I used New Look 6879 and made some minor alterations with the sash. I also wanted to make the dress a little fuller but ran out of netting and had to settle with what I had.

Baby Autumn's dress was a very simple A-line. I used this pattern to create it, but only used two rows of shirring. And the best part is that with the elastic threads, it will easily be worn as a tunic or top when she is older.

The flower is just gathered red twill ribbon that I sewed in a circle. Took literally three minutes.

Now we just need Easter to come!

Baby Bedding

I've taken a break from sewing clothes to work on my girls' room. I hope to create a calm, simple, cozy and feminine room.

I purchased a vintage coverlet for Scarlett from a local flee market. This became my inspiration for the entire room.

For my baby's crib, I needed to find baby bedding to match, and decided simple white chenille bumpers would look best. However, my search for chenille bumpers was futile and so I made my own. They really were not too hard, especially when you purchase these bumper fillers.

For the crib skirt, I cut a rectangle, from the chenille, and sewed elastic along the upper border. I used adhesive elastic on the frame of the crib so it would just stick right on. Super simple! The pom-poms, on the bedskirt, were white and I dyed them, along with the curtains to make a perfect color match.

Mobile is from HERE on etsy. I mailed a sample of the exact yellow I wanted the mobile in and she matched it beautifully. I know am now looking for some simple wall art... and I'll be DONE.

Ruffle Robe

Inspired by Dana's Ruffle Robe from MADE, I decided my little Scarlett needed one. I bought a used, ugly-patterned one at the thrift store for $1, cut it up for a pattern, and made my own version from some lavender and white terry cloth. I loved how it turned out. My only regret is that I wish I would have used a thicker terry cloth for added warmth.

My poor husband was confused why I would buy one robe, only to cut it up, to make another. There are some things only women understand.

Recently, I've found time to play with two online tutorials that I have been itching to try for while.

1. The Crayon Apron Tutorial. Samantha, from Bobaloo!, shares this tutorial on Prudent Baby. I loved that it was a great way to use up sewing scraps that otherwise are too small for other projects. I'm planning on making several for toddler gifts this year.

2. Freezer Stencil Tees. Tutorials for these have been all over the internet and now I see why. They are so easy and fun! I decided to add fabric details to make them multi-dimensional. As you can see I just stenciled a ballerina and then added tulle to great her tutu.

Ruffles & Plaid

In January, I stumbled upon a sewing blogger (Leslie from Creative Chicks) who claimed to have found the perfect pattern and I even dedicated an entire blog post to all the amazing versions she created (see them HERE). Well, I finally tried the pattern (Simplicity 4927) with a plaid polyester suiting and cotton ruffle. I'm hooked on this pattern! Super easy. The only complaint I have is that I would prefer a zipper in back so it could be more tailored. With such a small back opening, the dress needs to be baggier than I'd prefer to be able to get it on the child.

I am trying this again with a emerald green wool with gems around the neckline. I'll also add a zipper to the next version.

Smock Tutorial

Last year, I created a smock pattern and created this little flannel number for Miss Scarlett.

With leggings and boots, Scarlett looked darling.

It turned out so well that I made a second version out of a stretch viscose with metallic thread. I also lengthened the pattern, turning it into a dress.

On a roll, I next created it in a cotton gingham with orange contrasting thread.

I love this pattern. It's easy and versatile. I've had requests for a tutorial for sometime so here is a long overdue step-by-step tutorial.

What you need:

1. Fabric
2. Thread
3. Elastic Thread
4. Doily or broach (optional)

First, you need to make a pattern . Below are the dimensions that I used to make for my size 2T daughter. You will need to adjust the measurements for smaller or larger children. I just used one of Scarlett's tees as a base and just guessed.

You will start with four pieces. A front and back (both identical) and two sleeves.

First, with the right sides together, sew both the sides together of the front and back, like shown below. Set aside.

Now, take the two sleeve pieces. Hem the bottom of the trapezoid. This will be the hem of the sleeve .

Next, attach the sleeves, right sides together, to the main body. After they are attached, trim the top to make it even for easier hemming.

Now, hem the top of the tee (including the top of the sleeves) and the bottom. It will now look like a baggy top.

It's time to cinch it smaller by shirring it with elastic thread. Shirring is very easy. You just wrap elastic around a bobbin and sew normally (with regular thread on top) and it gathers the fabric for you. HERE is a great photo tutorial to follow by Pretty Ditty if you feel the need for more hand holding.

I start about 1/4 inch below the top hem and sew all the way the top, including the sleeves. Then repeat the process (while pulling the fabric taut) another 1/4 inch below that for the second row. Continue for several more rows, until it achieves the tightness and look you want. The lighter the fabric, the tighter it will gather.

For this particular smock, I experimented and only shirred the body of the front and back and pleated the sleeves. It worked great but I think I prefer including the sleeves while shirring.
And you are done! It's easy, easy, easy, easy. You can use this pattern to make a top, smock, or dress. And feel free to add any embellishments. For most mine, I add a crocheted doily that I cut from doilies (ebay is a great resource).

Halloween Rewind 2009

Isn't Halloween the best holiday? Candy and costumes are a wonderful combination.

Sadly, I will not be sewing any costumes this year as I'm busy adjusting to life with a newborn and toddler. However, I did want to share our Flintstone costumes I made us last year. I just used fleece and some clearance Old Navy tees.

Silk + Taffeta + Ruffles

With only 4 days before she is in my arms, I just finished her itty bitty blessing dress. I cannot wait to put it on her tiny little body in two weeks.

I started the dress without a pattern and made it up along the way. However, I was struggling with the bodice so I ended up adapting the top of this pattern (I took off the sleeves and added the neckline flounce) for the dress.

Sewing for little girls is simply the best.

Skirts Galore

I spent my labor day weekend trying to avoid going into labor (not for 10 more days!) and was able to get some sewing in. I was on a skirt kick and created 3 sassy skirts for Scarlett this fall.

I'm loving simple mod black and white and used strips of white and black cotton fabric to create this skirt. I purposely made it shorter since I think it will look sassy with super opaque tights and/or knee-high boots. Total cost: $8

Tulle and flannel together make for one feminine fall skirt. Last fall, I made a smock (below) with this same fabric and so now baby girl #2 and Scarlett can coordinate. Total Cost: $6

This may be my favorite skirt.....

I instantly fell in love with this fabric at Joann's Fabrics and was thrilled when it was on sale for only $1.99 / yard! I added matching pom-pom trim. While I know this makes the skirt hard to launder, I could not resist.

My Sewing Corner

I'm off bedrest and my sewing corner is finally up! With two weeks before baby girl #2 gets here, I'm going to have really try to get some good projects done before my world turns upside down for a bit.
For the shelving, I used the ClosetMaid (found at Home Depot) system which really consists of shelf tracks, brackets and shelves. I love how this puts all my sewing treasures far out of reach from wondering toddler hands.

This little corner is my escape/outlet from the everyday. I love having my machines always accessible for impromptu sewing.

Oh, and the fabric stash. I used to try and hide the amount from my husband and now that it is exposed, my hording is very apparent. I keep trying to use up what I have but I have such a weakness for textiles.

Ode to Picasa

I had grand plans to sew matching bedding for Scarlett and her little sister, as they will be sharing a room. Sadly, bedrest squashed those plans. My solution is to use items I already have and purchase a few others (trying to stay on a budget) to make it come together before the little one arrives.

My walls are grey with white molding and I plan to use shades of reds and pinks in the room. Then, I wondered what pops of lemon yellow would add. With Picasa (Google's free photo program), I simply take screenshots of what I like and have, crop them, and put them into a collage to help get an idea of what colors and elements would look together.

Felt Hydrangeas

Nothing puts a damper on sewing like doctor-ordered bed rest. I'm not allowed to even sit-up but need to remain horizontally for the next month to avoid pre-term labor. Boo. Thank goodness I found at least one sewing project that can be completed while on my back.

These felt flowers are easy, fast and help pass many of the long long days. I've included a brief tutorial below (taken on my pillow).

1. Start with cutting a felt circle and several (10-20) petals, in soft x-shapes. Don't stress about making the petals perfect or uniform.

2.Start sewing them on, one at a time by simply sewing an "X" shape in each of the centers. I also like to pull the thread taut to help it bunch, making it multi-dimensional and more life life. Make a circle along the outer ring and fill in the center after.

3. The back will be a mess. I like to add a felt leaf at this stage and them add another felt circle on the back to make the flower more polished and help it remain flat. Sew the back on, making sure you secure the leaf in the process.

And that's it! Now add this to a headband or secure a clip on the back. It can be used for a hair accessory or broach.

Hmmm... any other sewing projects I can work on horizontally?

Sewing Station?

We are moving this weekend and I am contemplating this desk, from Ikea, for my new sewing station. I could fill baskets for the shelves with notions and hang shelves on top for the infamous fabric stash. Very tempting for only $119.

Here are several projects from the web that are on my to do list! With being 30 weeks pregnant, on semi-bed rest, watching an active toddler and moving this week to a new city, I am not sure when I'll get around to them but I can daydream for now, right?

I've always hated matchy family portraits but with baby girl #2 only nine weeks away, I wonder if matching/cordinating outfits for my two little girls would be cute. Or would it be cheesy? Leslie, from a room somewhere posted photos of this doily wedding dress and it took my breathe away! Have you ever seen anything more gorgeous? I have a million doilies from ebay and would love to use them in this way but can you imagine the hours of hand sewing this would require? Awhile ago, I saw a tutorial for this toddler skirt, made from a men's shirt on Sparkle Power.

Well, when my husband purged his closet of 12 dress shirts, I jumped at the opportunity to sew one. It's literally a 10 minutes project and came out pretty cute.

At first I worried it would be too pioneer-like but once paired with a cute top, it looks pretty cute.

Nesting

I've been busy nesting here for Baby Girl #2.

I recently made a car seat tent to keep her sleeping well and sick strangers a little further away. I love it but I it is a bit too long on the sides. Unfortunately, the rick rack trim would be a nightmare to redo if I shortened it so I'm keeping it the way it is.

Super easy! The only changes I made were to add the trim and make the velcro tabs instead of ties.

I also made new nursing cover. Again, these are a no-brainer to sew. The secret is to use right type of boning. Rigilene Sew-Thru Boning is the only brand I would go with. The other brands do not work well. It can be hard to find but I can always find it at Hancock's Fabrics and on Etsy.

The only changes I made was to shorten both straps a bit.

Chiffon Tee Tutorial

These bright tees are my latest project and take literally minutes to create. It all started with leftover the nylon chiffon strips that I had from creating these two can-can skirts below.

It occurred to me that these scraps might work well on a plain tee. Here is how it is done:

1. Take two long (about 4 times the length of the collar) strips of nylon chiffon and place one strip on the other strip. You can use the same color or different hues, as shown.

2. Adjust your sewing machine tension to a tighter level (I put mine on 7) and increase your stitch length to the longest setting. Now sew. The chiffon with automatically begin to gather and ruffle before your eyes.

(This is what your result will be)

3. Now take a plain tee and lay the ruffle (you may need to pull the threads and loosen it slightly) along the collar. Pin in place and sew. Make sure you adjust your tension and stitch length back to the normal settings first.

And that is it! Look at what that simple embellishment did to that plain tee. I love how the lighter chiffon peeks through the darker layer.

I also did it in yellow but with the same color of chiffon for more of a monochromatic look. The yellow actually is my favorite version. It just screams summer.

rotate the light and darker chiffon, as shown.

The Sunshine Skirt!

After making the can-can skirt for Emily, I just had to make one for little Scarlett. I decided to use summer yellows and oranges, like sunshine. It seemed like an appropriate way to kick off summer.

I love the Can-Can skirt pattern. It's so easy and flexible. Purchase it HERE. Consider it a crucial sewing investment for those with little girls.

It turned out a little big but I decided to just let her grow into it. I swear the only photos she will stand still for are the ones with that finger up her nose!

After making the skirt, I saw it against black and it suddenly resembled candy corn.

I had no idea that the summer skirt I was making would transition into her Halloween costume this October. I was multi-tasking without knowing it! Imagine it with orange tights, a white turtle neck and white coned hat. Perfect, huh? Now I just need another costume for our new baby girl, that will join us in September. Another Halloween candy would be prefect. Any suggestions?

Strawberry Party

Some friends are throwing a strawberry themed birthday party for their darling 3 year-old and asked me to make a strawberry inspired dress and party favors.

Here is what I created:

For the outfit, I decided to do a red and pink full can-can skirt. I topped with a simple tank that I embellished with a green ruffle, like the leaves on a strawberry.

While the skirt took a lot of work and time, it was not difficult and I'd highly recommend it! Scarlett just kept saying 'pretty' and was not happy that it was not meant for her. I'll have to make her one too!

For the party favors, I created these strawberry barrettes.

And, for a gift, I decided to create this fabric strawberries that designed to be pin cushions but I just made them a lot larger for little Emily to play with.

Ice Cream Dress Pattern

oliver + s released three new patterns this week and I've got my eye on the ice cream dress. I've never tried one of their patterns (I can't seem to bring myself to pay that much $15.95 + 5.95 shipping) but maybe it's time. I just can't stop thinking of all the possibilities I could come up with. Maybe I will get it for my birthday and that will solve everything.

I love this color-block version that was off the oliver + s blog.

I also adore the shirt version. What beautiful fabrics they chose.

Has anyone else tried their patterns? What do you think? Do they ever go on sale?

I came across a tutorial this darling Sweet Shirred Summer Dress at Pudent Baby and could not wait to try it. I loved the simplicity, shirring, fabric and colors.

I made my version with a lightweight cotton gingham, deep purple bias tape and a crocheted flower add-on.

While I do love the dress, I was a little disappointed that it did not meet in the center like the red one at Prudent Baby. Perhaps I did not cut it right or maybe I needed a lighter fabric. Or perhaps I need to find a technique to create tighter shirring. Oh well, she looks beautiful in it and that's all that matters.

I just had to include this photo with Scarlett's finger up her nose. Her finger practically lives up there these days.

Dotted Swiss

I have a weakness for dotted swiss. There is something wonderfully nostalgic about the texture and the tiny dots.

Last year, during my first trip to NYC's fabric district, I stumbled upon light blue dotted swiss with red dots. Instant love! The only problem was that the fabric was $30 a yard. I've never spent more than about $12 a yard for fabric in my life. With some persuasion, I talked the fabric store down to $20 for a yard and allowed myself just one yard of that sacred material.

I originally planned to make this dress (New Look 6688) :

However, when I went to attach the bodice to the skirt, I saw I did not make it long enough for my tall toddler. My solution was to drop the empire waist to a real waist (adding several inches), and adding some elastic to create separate skirt. For the top, I just added a bottom panel with several ruffles and a side zipper.

I apologize for my blogging hiatus. I'm 15 weeks pregnant with my second child and there was about 5 weeks where I was too sick and exhausted to do anything. Even the thought of blogging and sewing overwhelmed me. I just wanted to sleep. But I'm feeling much better now and promise to start posting more regularly. Stay tuned! YOUR Layered Jersey Skirt photos

Look at these two 'layered jersey skirt' creations.

Ali made this from two old shirts but it ended up being too tight for a skirt so she got creative and saved it by turning it into a tank! It turned out darling and I love the rose she added.

Krissy Taylor just learned how to use a sewing machine LAST WEEK and look at well this turned out (with the coordinating top). Alternating a solid with a pattern is a fun twist. Her 2-year old loves her 'dancing skirt'.

Tutorial: Fabric Wall Decal

I've discovered an easy and effective way to create your own wall decals. This enables you to be able to choose the fabric and design it yourself, while saving you bundles of money. My method also will not damage walls so is prefect for renters and those of us who struggle with committing with long-term wall treatments.

When I first decided to take on this challenge, I tried using liquid starch since I've read that was a solution. It was a disaster! It was a messy process and it simply did not work at all for larger decals (the fabric was too heavy) and even when it did work for the smaller decals, I found my toddler could easily peel it off. I was frustrated and knew I needed a better system. After months of brainstorming and many failed experiments, I finally found a great solution that I would love to share with you. I recently created bird to keep my giraffe company and photographed every step.

1. Create a pattern. For small patterns, like the bird below, this is easy but for larger decals, like my giraffe, this is the most time-consuming step for me. It's hard to free-hand a giraffe that is almost as tall as myself! Cut out the pattern when you are satisfied with your design.

2. Set the pattern aside. Now, place ironed fabric down so that the wrong side of the fabric is facing you. Now, we apply the adhesive (the real secret for making this work).

For the adhesive, you will want double stick fusible web, that is often used in appliques. This product is sticky on both sides (for temporary adhesive) and bonds semi-permanently with an iron. I used Steam-A-Seam2 and it works like a gem! It is cheap and comes with several 9X12 sheets. The sheets work great for smaller appliques, like the bird, but you need a much larger size for large projects, like my giraffe. Fortunately, Steam-A-Seam2 comes in large rolls (up to 24X36) for about $8.00 a yard. This large size can be hard to find but you can purchase it HERE, at www.softexpressions.com.

The fusible webbing has protective wax like paper on both sides. Remove one of the layers of paper and carefully place it sticky side down onto the wrong side of the fabric.

4. Use your pattern now to trace the pattern onto the paper that is remaining on the webbing (you can always skip the first two steps and just create the pattern here but I like having a separate pattern so I can use it again).

5. Cut out the pattern.

6. You will now have three layers (fabric, clear webbing, protective paper). Remove the paper.

7. You can and stick it to the desired wall-location,using your hands to smooth out any bumps. You can lift it off and on the wall to try different locations since it will stick, but not bond to the wall, until we iron it. Once you are happy with the location, use a hot iron and press it against the decal, while on the wall. This creates a strong hold that even deter the naughtiest of toddlers.

(Yes, that is our front door next to the giraffe. We live in a NYC one-bedroom so Scarlett sleeps in the entry way. Maybe one day she'll get a real room)

*You can remove this at anytime by lifting an edge and easily peeling it off. The best part is that it does not damage the walls. I had my giraffe on for over a year and just pealed it back and the wall looks untouched. We have typical white painted walls. I'm not sure how it will react on other surfaces. Always test first!

**Once the decal is ironed on, it cannot be removed and stuck somewhere else. New adhesive would need to be applied.

Beautiful Collar

She added a very feminine collar to a simple a-line dress to make it a standout. This collar was actually inspired my blossom tee.

Bubble Skirt

*Tip: After you ruffle the material, use a zig-zag stitch to attach the fabric to the tights. The zig-zag allows the tights to stretch a bit without breaking the threads. If you do hear from breaking, it's from the original gathering stitch which is just fine since it should be secure with the zig-zag. You can always pullout the gathering stitched before the toddler wears it as well. Either way works.

The Perfect Dress

I've been on the search for a good basic dress pattern that gives a basic structure and is flexible enough that I can play around with. I think I just found it.

Leslie, from Creative Chicks call this the 'The Perfect Dress' pattern (Simplicity 4927) and created 6 beautiful variations with it.

Dots and Ruffles (from her Etsy shop)

I love them all! And you can bet that I ordered Simplicity 4927 the same day I saw this post. The possibilities are endless - it really is the best basic pattern to start with. You could add ruffles, appliques, tulle underneath, or whatever you can dream up.

**For the first time, I elected to get this pattern in the downloadable version, where I just print it myself. Mistake! It's 26 pages long and takes quite a bit of work to pieces the pages together to form the patterns. I'll be sticking to traditional paper patterns for now on.

Updated Tutorial: Layered Jersey Skirt

Wow! I'm flattered at what a hit the Layered Jersey Skirt tutorial has been. I usually get between 25- 75 hits a day and so you can imagine my surprise when I saw over 1,300 hits today. The skirt was featured on Luvinthemommyhood, Craft Gossip (who also did a post on my Blossom Tee Tutorial), and several other blogs.

If I would have known how popular this tutorial was going to be, I would have taken more detailed photos. However, I did go back and give better, more detailed instructions for those planning to create this skirt. I just altered the original post so you can just go HERE. Button Clips

Seeing these reminded me just how easy funky hair-clips for little girls can be. Just use hot glue to secure and you're done. However, they do warn to glue the buttons on with the barrette open and let dry overnight.

Yo-yo Tutorial

Yo-yos to make great embellishments for little girls (or big girls) clothes. You can add them to dresses, tees, skirts, or just about anything. I've fallen in love with the yo-yo and use it often. I've even had enough requests, that I started selling yo-yo embellished tees in my etsy shop HERE.

While they take time, anyone can make them! They are FAST, FUN, and do not require a machine (great project to work on while waiting for the dentist). They are also a great way to use up scrap fabric you have lying around. Use cotton, silk, seersucker or whatever.

Tutorial: Layered Jersey Skirt

Inspired by this skirt...

(Crewcuts - Girl's Layered Cake Skirt - cotton and silk- $34.50)

I made this jersey version for my toddler:

And here is how I made it. It's super simple and soft for summer! Keep in mind I made this for a size skinny 2T. You will need to increase or decrease the measurements for your child's size. Also, don't worry about the ruffles all being the exact same width. The variety adds a little sass.

Also remember that sewing with a small zig-zag or stretch stitch is recommended on knits, as it allows the fabric to stretch slightly, without breaking the threads.

1. Start with 1 yard of two colors of jersey (total of 2 yards but you'll have extra left over).

2. Cut a rectangle. I just used one of her skirts and added several inches in both width and length for seam allowances. Mine ended up being 13 X 25 inches. **Make sure you make this a little too large in the body to allow stretch when you put it on, or the threads will break. It will end up fitting perfectly as you pull the waist in with the elastic waistband. Always error on too large as you can always take some away but you can't add material.

3. Cut three, 2 X 36 inch (approximately) strips of each color. You should have a total of 6 strips.

4. Ruffle all the strips of fabric. The easiest way to do this is to set your tension at it's highest (typically 9) and the width to the longest and just sew ( do NOT backstitch). It will naturally gather the fabric. Leave excess threads on both sides so you can have room to ease the gather to the length of the skirt (it will most likely be too tight and you'll need to loosen the ruffles).
5. Then, pin the ruffles onto the rectangle and sew them on, one row at a time. Leave about 4 inches of material at the top, where you don't add ruffles. You'll use this area for the waistband.

6. After all ruffles are sewn on, put the short sides of the rectangle together (right sides together) and sew. It will now be a tube and start to resemble a skirt. I think this is the hardest part of the skirt as it can be difficult to line up the ruffles on both sides. Mine ended up being slightly off but I just trimmed the ruffles afterwards to help them match up.

7. Now fold over extra material on top to meet the first ruffle and sew. Fold it over again and top-stitch with a zig-zag stitch. Leave a small section of the waistband (near the seam of the tube) open so you can insert the elastic.

8. Add elastic (I used 1/2 inch non-roll). I just measured my daughter's waist and added a few inches. Sew the last few inches of the top-stiching on waistband. And you're done!

Blossom Tee Tutorial

It all started with this $5 jersey tee I bought at Target two weeks ago.

Since I’m petite up top, the neckline went dangerously low and was showing off stuff it should not. I have this problem constantly but I finally came up with a good solution! Simply sew around the neckline with elastic thread. This cinches it right up and allows for some much needed modesty.

Next, I cut about 5 inches off the sleeves. This provided material for the flowers and gave the top 3/4 length sleeves. The great thing about working with jersey is that it won’t fray so you don’t need to worry about hems. I then cut lumpy squares, pinched them into flower shapes, nested them into another pinched square, pinned them in place and sewed them on one after another, like this.

When sewing them on, I just pointed the flowers on their side and sewing the tips as shown below. They will naturally fall down and ‘blossom’ from the weight of the material.

THIS TUTORIAL helped me but I did a much sloppier faster technique that involved no hand-sewing (Who has the patience or time? Not I. Scarlett is my sleeping time bomb).

Not bad for $5, huh? I love the end result and it was quite rewarding to transform a boring tee into something quite fun.

*Confession: I actually spent $10 since I wanted more ruffle than the cut off sleeves allowed so I bought an extra shirt to cut up.
